The Minneapolis kid who could play every instrument on his albums — and did, on most of them — Prince was as much a one-man studio phenomenon as he was a performer. Equal parts funk, rock, R&B, and pure spectacle, he's consistently ranked among the greatest guitarists who ever lived despite the guitar being almost a side note to everything else he could do. The ruffled shirts and platform boots were part of the deal.
