WWF's giant panda logo — a hand-drawn silhouette inspired by Chi Chi, a panda at the London Zoo in 1961 — was designed by naturalist Sir Peter Scott to be reproducible cheaply in black and white. The logo doubled as a practical decision: it's cheaper to print with less ink, and the giant panda became the symbol of global conservation.
