The bridged layers are specially made so that they won't fall apart or lose 'islands' when you cut them.

Using the Stencils

Cut out and paint your five-layer stencil of Genie. Decide whether you will use the natural surface color as one of your layers. For example, if your surface color is close to the color ghostwhite , then you may choose to omit the first layer since the surface has this color already. Tip #20:

Less is more

You might think that, the more color layers a stencil has, the better. But often less is more. Portraits of faces work great with three layers: dark, mid-tone and light. They're easier to cut and paint, and they're usually more elegant and pleasing to look at. Our advice: shoot for three layers, and add layers as needed.
